ABERDARE NATIONAL PARK
It’s a mountain park and 3rd highest Mountain range in Kenya (attitude between 1800-4000m). Has spectacular features i.e. torrential create falls i.e. Karura falls, Gura Falls and lichen-hug humid forest through which the forest elephants pass, moorlands. The home of block rhino, duckers, Bongo antelope etc. cause from where freedom fighters (MAU MAU) fought against British forces. Other activities includes; moorland, hiker, forest walks and fishing sports.
MT KENYA NATIONAL PARK
Registered in 1949 with an area of 715km2 covers the Mt. Kenya (5199m) the second highest mountain in Africa. Has 3 highest peaks: Batian 5199m, Nelion 5188m, Lenana 4986m. The lower slope is dense forest of cedar, olive and podo which matches into bamboo zone at about 2440m Activities offered e.g. Mt. climbing, likings and camping, Game viewing from mountain lodge-animals i.e. Black rhino, spotted hyenas, buffalo, elephants etc.
MERU NATIONAL PARK
Very magnificent park with grass savannah, Acacia trees doum and raphia palm and baobabs and this resembles the Tarangire park in Tanzania situated on N. East foot of Mt. Kenya where couple Adamson introduced the famous lioness named “ELSA” into the nature. They also shot the film “walking with a lion”. The animals to be seen are like, black and white rhino. Reticulated giraffe, hippopotamus, grevy zebra, lion, leopard etc. Over 350 bird species have been recorded.
SHABA, SAMBURU AND BUFFALO SPRINGS NATIONAL RESERVES
The 3 parks are placed place along the only river Uaso Nyiro Shaba covers 239 km2, Samburu 165km2 and buffalo springs 131km2. Are covered by semi-arid plain with granite outcrop, thorn bushes open grass, acacia woodland and doum palms along the riverline. Its specialty are: Reticulated giraffe Beisa Oryx, Gerenuk/ Giraffe antelope, Grevy zebra blue necked Somali Ostrich, also lion leopard, cheetah. Popular when Joy Adamson introduction her leopard “Penny” into nature shouted the film “Born Free” a lioness adapted a 3 day old baby of antelope Oryx An exceptional photographs of animals i.e. elephants earthing in the river Uaso Nyiro has some 300 species of birds.
